An attempt to photoreactivate ultraviolet inactivated streptococci.

چکیده
Kelner (Sci. American, 184, 22, 1951) reported that the reactivation spectrum for Streptomycee gri8eu is very similar to the absorption spectrum for iron porphyrin systems, while that of Escherichia coli is somewhat different. Latarjet et al. (J. Gen. Physiol., 35, 455, 1952) reactivated irradiated microorganisms by catalase, and Berger et al. (J. Bacteriol., 65, 539, 1953) found that sodium azide prevented photoreactivation of E. coli, Chromobacterium violceum and Micrococcus pyogenes. This note reports attempts to photoreactivate Streptococcu faecaliu strain 10Cl and Streptococcu latis strain L21S, organisms lacking iron porphyrin systems. E. coli strain B/r and Aerobacer aerogenes strain 600 were used as controls.

The Sensitivity of Streptococci to Penicillin G After Exposure to the Antibiotic in Vivo *
Previous investigations by Grunberg, Schnitzer, and Unger3 on the topical anti-streptococcal activity of penicillin showed that the antibiotic could be inactivated experimentally, up to a 5-hour interval, in the infected tissues of mice. After that time, the irreversible damage conferred on the organisms by the drug superseded the effect of the penicillin-destroying agents. These experiments al...
متن کاملThe Properties of T Antigens Extracted from Group a Hemolytic Streptococci
1. T antigens of group A hemolytic streptococci have been obtained in soluble form by digestion of the bacterial cells with pepsin or trypsin. Large quantities of this antigen were readily extracted from type 1 strains, whereas only small amounts could be obtained from strains of other types. 2. The T antigen, prepared in this way from a type 1 strain, was partially purified by chemical precipi...
متن کاملDegree of ultraviolet radiation damage and repair capabilities are related to G+C content in marine vibriophages
A key issue in the ecology of viruses in the marine environment is the rate of viral production and decay. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight has been found to cause loss of infectivity in marine bacteriophages at rates nearly equal to all other decay mechanisms combined. There are 2 main host-mediated mechanisms that can repair UV-damaged phage DNA: photoreactivation and excision repai...
متن کاملClot formation by group A streptococci.
Group A streptococci of several different M serotypes can cause human plasma to clot in nutrient-poor media. Addition of glucose to the medium prevents clot formation. Once formed, clots are stable for several days and can be lysed on addition of exogenous streptokinase or urokinase. Clot lysis can also be achieved by addition of glucose to a clot containing wild-type group A streptococci but n...
متن کاملThe Antigenic Potency of Epidemic Influenza Virus following Inactivation by Ultraviolet Radiation
A study of the antigenic potency of influenza virus inactivated by ultraviolet radiation has been made. Virus so inactivated is still capable of functioning as an immunizing agent when given to mice by the intraperitoneal route. In high concentrations inactivated virus appears to be nearly as effective as active virus but when quantitative comparisons of the immunity induced by different diluti...
